Lens Compatibility

E: Electronic Diaphragm

The new electronic diaphragm lenses only work on Nikons introduced since about 2007.

They work only on the D5, D4, D4s, D3, D3s, D3P, D3x, Df, D810, D800/e, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300, D300s, D7000, D7100, D7200, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

Their electronic diaphragms won't work with any other Nikons. On other cameras they always shoot wide-open, and everything else will work per the technology of the rest of the lens.

Type E lens aperture blades are controlled with a motor which receives power and the control signal from the camera body, this provides highly accurate control of the rounded diaphragm blades, delivering enhanced stability of auto exposure control during continuous shooting. In comparison, D or G-type lens aperture blades are controlled with a mechanical lever.

As the electromagnetic aperture requires additional power from the camera, not all cameras are compatible with type E lenses.

D1 series, D2 series, D40 series, D50, D60, D70 series, D80, D90, D100, D200 and D3000 are not compatible. Other D-SLR cameras are compatible.
The Nikon 1 J5 is not compatible when used with the FT1 mount adapter. Other Nikon 1 series cameras are compatible when the FT1 mount adapter is used.
Film cameras are not compatible with type E lenses.
Teleconverters - many current teleconverters are compatible with type E lenses, however autofocus may be limited depending on the combined aperture of the lens and teleconverter and whether the camera supports autofocus at f/8.

AF-P Lenses

Nikon's Pulse Motor
Nikon's new "P" series of NIKKOR lenses use a pulse motor (utilizing stepping motors) to focus smoother and quieter than previous drive systems. Bring subjects into focus instantly with absolute precision. When recording video, smoothly shift focus from subject to subject with practically no drive noise.

*Based on CIPA Standard. This value is achieved when DX-format compatible lenses are attached to a DX-format digital SLR camera and zoom lenses are set at the maximum telephoto position.

**The lens will default to VR on when attached to models released prior to the D3400: D3300, D5500, D5300, D5200, D7200, D7100. These cameras will also require a firmware upgrade to access the menu to turn off the VR.

The number of cameras compatible with both lenses is limited. Even for compatible cameras, firmware update may be required*. Fully compatible models: D5500, D5300*, D3400, D3300*, D500 and later models

Compatible models with limited functions: D5, D810 series, Df, D750, D7200, D7100, D5200, Nikon 1 series with the FT1

Incompatible models: D4 series, D3 series, D2 series, D1 series, D800 series, D700, D610, D600, D300 series, D200, D100, D7000, D5100, D5000, D90, D80, D70 series, D3200, D3100, D3000, D60, D50, D40 series, film cameras
